Woman and child accessing food at a food pantry

Health and food programs for uninsured Virginians.

How can I access health care if I don’t have health insurance?

For emergency care needs:

Charity Care

If you get emergency care at a hospital, you may be able to get financial aid to help pay your medical bills. Every hospital has their own eligibility rules and can give you an application.

Hospital charity care is not considered a public charge. To apply, talk to the hospital where you got emergency care or contact a navigator to learn more about your options.

For everyday health care needs:

Community Clinics

You can get care at a free clinic or community health center (CHC) without health insurance for free or a low cost based on your income.

Call a clinic or health center near you to get more information about any requirements and schedule your first appointment.

How can I get food assistance for my family if I don’t qualify for SNAP?

For all individuals and families:

Food Pantries

If you are struggling to buy food, you might be able to get free groceries at a local food pantry.

Some food pantries have rules about who can use them. They may need you to bring something to prove your address or income. Call your local pantry before you visit to learn more.

For pregnant individuals or families with young children:

WIC

If you are pregnant or have children under five, you may be able to get help with food and nutrition through WIC.

You have to meet eligibility guidelines (including income) to apply. There is no immigration status requirement.

For families with school-age children:

School Meals

School-age children who qualify can get free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch at school. Depending on your child’s school, they might get it automatically — or you might have to apply.
